Vitamin B - Benefits, Deficiency Symptoms And Food Sources

Alternative name :: Vitamin B-complex

What is Vitamin B?

The term "vitamin B" actually refers to "vitamin B-complex," a group of eight closely related but chemically distinct vitamins that frequently work together to maintain health. Some B vitamins are referred to by their " B name," while others are better known by their chemical name. The B-complex vitamins are vitamin B1 (thiamin), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin B7 (biotin), vitamin B9 (folic acid or folate), and vitamin B12 (cobalamin).

Their combined functions include maintaining skin and muscle tone, enhancing immune and nervous system functions, promoting cell growth and division, encouraging proper brain function, and sustaining the health of eyes, hair, liver, and mouth.

Benefits of Vitamin B

The B vitamins help to maintain the health of the nerves, skin, eyes, hair, liver, and mouth, as well as healthy muscle tone in the gastrointestinal tract and proper brain function. B-complex vitamins act as coenzymes, helping enzymes to react chemically with other substances, and are involved in energy production. They may be useful for alleviating depression or anxiety as well. Adequate intake of the B vitamins is very important for elderly people because these nutrients are not as well absorbed as we age
