Blepharitis And It's Treatment

Blepharitis is an inflammation of the outer edges of the eyeads that causes redness, itching, burning, and, often, a sensation of having something in one's eye. Other possible symptoms include swelling of the eyelids, loss of eyelashes, excessive tearing, and sensitivity to light. Secretions may ;form crusts that "glue" the eyes together during sleep.

Blepharitis Symptoms and Signs

Regardless of which type of blepharitis you have, you will probably have such symptoms as eye irritation, burning, tearing, foreign body sensation , crusty debris (in the lashes, in the corner of the eyes or on the lids), dryness, and red eyelid margins.

It is important to see an eye doctor and get treatment. If your blepharitis is bacterial, possible long-term effects are thickened lid margins, dilated and visible capillaries, trichiasis , eyelash loss, ectropion and entropion . The lower third of the cornea may exhibit significant erosion .

Causes of Blepharitis

This condition may be caused by an infection of the eyelash follicles or glands at the outer edges of the eyelids. Eyestrain, poor hygiene, poor living and sleeping habits, poor nutrition, and systemic disease with resulting immunodepression commonly contribute to the problem. Blepharitis may also be associated with seborrhea of the face or scalp.

Home remedies & herbs for blepharitis treatment

  • Warm eyebright, goldenseal, or mullein compresses are soothing and help reduce inflammation. Prepare a tea using one of these herbs, cool it to a comfortably warm temperature. and soak a clean cloth or a piece of sterile cotton in it to make the compress. Apply the compress and relax for ten to fifteen minutes. Then make a fresh compress and gently wipe the edge of the eyelid and the area around and between the eyelashes to remove any scaly matter or druff-like debris. Do this twice a day or as needed. Use each compress only once before laundering or discarding it.
  • Keep the eyelids clean, especially along the edges the procedure described under Herbs, above), but do not touch or rub your eyes except when necessary. Always wash your hands before touching your eyes.
  • Daily shampooing of eyelashes (using a mild shampoo on a damp applicator stick or a washcloth) to remove scales from the lid margins; also, frequent shampooing of the scalp and eyebrows. This help to cure seborrheic blepharitis.
